Lessons from 2024: Growth, Leadership, and Loyalty in Soul Line Dance Community from Cyberbullying

2024 was a year of immense growth for me, both personally and professionally. It was a year marked by challenges that tested my resilience, redefined my relationships, and reshaped my perspective on leadership and loyalty. While the experiences were far from easy, they ultimately became a catalyst for significant personal development and a renewed focus on my goals for 410 Line Dancers.

Facing Cyberbullying in the Soul Line Dance Community

One of the most difficult situations I faced was a cyberbullying incident that escalated beyond anything I could have imagined. The conflict began when someone created a dance over one of my dances from years ago and planned to present it at my event. When I expressed my concerns, the situation spiraled into an overwhelming online attack. Over 1,083 people, including individuals I considered friends, participated in deeply personal attacks against me, with two of them even making direct threats. It was disheartening and isolating to see people I trusted join the fray, offering excuses and accusatory justifications for their behavior without even trying to understand my perspective.

I quickly realized that arguing back and forth online was futile. Neither side was truly listening to the other, and the hostility only deepened. Instead, I chose to step back and assess the situation. Why did people feel so entitled to their perspective as the ultimate truth? How long had some been waiting for an opportunity to express this negativity? These questions forced me to reevaluate whom I called friends and whether the loyalty I offered was reciprocated. As painful as the experience was, it also revealed a brighter side. Not everyone agreed with the attacks against me. The majority did not. My group, 410 Line Dancers, stood unwavering in their support. Many others reached out privately to express their solidarity and encouragement. These silent supporters reminded me that not all battles are fought loudly or publicly and that genuine connections often reveal themselves in times of adversity.

Leadership Lessons I Learned

In navigating these challenges, I sought guidance from mentors and trusted confidants. Their wisdom helped me realize several key truths:

Leadership comes with Challenges. Doing things your way and disrupting the status quo often attracts criticism and resistance, but it’s a natural part of being a leader.

Boundaries Are Essential: Some people who had access to me needed to be removed from my inner circle. My energy and focus are valuable, and not everyone is entitled to them.

My opinion is my currency. I’ve learned to be more selective about where and how I share my thoughts, ensuring they’re invested in spaces and with people who value them. Stay Focused on Your Goals: My objectives for 410 Line Dancers remain clear despite setbacks. I’m committed to advancing our mission and creating positive experiences for those who rely on me.

Moving Forward with Purpose

Ultimately, the moral of the story is this: Stay focused on your goals. Not everyone needs to like you or agree with you. Power ahead anyway. Adversity, while uncomfortable, is often the forge in which resilience and clarity are strengthened. For me, 2024 was that forge, and I’m stepping into the future with renewed determination and purpose.
